I worked for Worc. County Inst. for Savings in the mortgage loan dept. I have a message for Mort Smith. My life has taken on a new direction for the past 30 years. I'm happily married and have a son who is serving in the United States Marine Corp. - just returned from his 2nd tour in Iraq. I'm very involved in church, actually write curriculum for Sunday School. I know how disappointed you were last time we met, but please know that everything is okay now. It was very embarrassing for me too - don't know how I got to that point, but I will always remember working for you at the bank and I looked up to you. Sorry for taking up this much space for a personal message, however I've been carrying around a burden for years and when I saw this site I took the opportunity. I only pray that Mort will see this and know how sorry I am. Don't know any other way to get in touch with him. I'm living in Texas now.

Worcester sure had a lot of banks when I was growing up in the 1940's & 50's. Mom and Dad somehow managed to put $5 a week into a bank. Dad earning about $40 a week at Parker & Harper (Dewey street). Interior of this bank was special, open floor plan with stone walls and floors.

My parents opened my first bank account at WCIS days after I was born in 1949. I fondly remember the grand open foyer and having my deposits stamped into my savings book.

I have a brass coin savings bank from this bank. I believe it is in the image of the building. Pretty neat.

The ceiling inside was supposedly a Guastavino tile vaulted ceiling with an occulus (window). As of know, the bank has a dropped ceiling covering this. The satellite photo shows a dome on top. This must have been incredible - does anyone remember this or have photos of it?

I started a bank account with WCIS back in 1985 (or 86).. I was given a free alarm clock for openning the account, the other options was a cordless phone I believe.. I choose correctly, this alarm clock has woken me up with the same extremely annoying sounds ever day for the last 28 or 29 years and its still going strong.. They don't build alarm clocks that this anymore.. I wouldn't part with if for any reason.. I've gotten new model given to me a birthdays and christmas but I refuse to replace this clock.. :)

I JUST FOUND AN OLD LIFE INSURAND POLICY FROM WCIS. LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON WHO TOOK THEM OVER AND IS MY POLICY STILL VALID?

There was a 138-page book published in 1928 for the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Worcester County Institution for Savings. The book contains a lot of history, with photographs, about this institution until 1928. Page 48 has a photo of the Guastavino tile vaulted ceiling spoken about by Mike Volk in this forum in March 2014. I have a copy of the book. Copies also appear on AbeBooks.com.
