That's the Church with some of the Best Gargoyles at the top. It's Between Pleasant And Elm on Harvard.

The picture you have of Union Church,is NOT located on Harvard st.It is located on CHESTNUT st.# 5-9. It faces the top of Pearl st. I know this because I work for the company that owns that church.If you think the gargoyles are something to look at,you should see inside.It has some of the most beautiful wood work in the ceiling. Rumor has it that a ship builder buit the ceilings. Just thought I'd set the record straight.

Mr. Sutliff in the last post mentioned that the company he works for owns the build. Is the building still up for sale? I know it was for a few years, but I haven't lived in the city since 1999. When I last checked, (92 or 93... I can't recall) the realtor who owned it wanted 1.5 million for it. The option was there to lease it for 10K/month triple net. I was interested in turning it into a restaurant, art gallery, and nightclub. It was a little big at 30,000 square feet with the attached residence and chapel.

I attended this church in the late 40s and early 50s. It was (is?) called Chestnut St. Congregational Church. To this day I can remember singing in the choir on the church steps at several Easter sunrise services all bundled up and freezing cold!

When Central Congregational and Chestnut Street Congregational merged in the 1980s/1990s they agreed to sell whichever one sold first - that was Chestnut St. C. Church. Development plans fell through and it sat abandoned for years. It finally sold to a religious group from Shrewsbury.

Mr Anderson in the last post: Do you know what the date is that the religious group bought the property? Mr. Knight, believe it or not I remember when you looked at the property and were talking about putting a night club and restaurant in it, I kept thinking to myself "that would be a hell of a project" and was wondering how something like that would look, especially in the main area with the huge columns and all the woodwork in the ceiling?

Evangelical religious group bought the church a couple years ago and undertook major renovations. Have no idea what they did to the inside, but can't imagine we'd recognize it. It's now called "The Dream Center."

i have attended liberty church for 3 years..the architecture in this building is magnificent..the church was built by the wealthy for the wealthy..today its use is by a wide diversity ..rich,poor and homeless ..i'm so happy this church was available when liberty churches bought this beautiful building..amen !!

Does anyone have pictures of the Union Cong'l interior containing the pipe organ? Especially info or picture of the pre-1958 organ.

I was in the choir at the church about 1954.We would meet there on Wednesdays and practice singing with a lady playing the piano.Was awesome being in front balcony singing at Easter.

I sang in the junior choir in the early 50s. Rehearsals were on Wednesday afternoons and Shirley Collins played the piano and directed us. She was also the church organist and played magnificently!
