The Worcester Ar Museum was founded in 1896 by 50 prominent citizens including Stephen Salisbury III. The doors were first opened on May 10, 1898. Salisbury donated the land and the Worcester architect Stephen C. Earle designed it.

As a young child I took art lessons at the Worcester Art Museum. I can remember going downstairs to the basement for the class. The museum had a distinct smell that I remember to this day. I am an artist and have been to many museums. I have not found another museum with a Buddha as scary as the one in this collection. No matter where you are in the room its eyes are focused right on you! On a scale 1 to 10, I rate it an 8. A small museum with a wonderful collection.

I used to like to visit the art musuem at least once a month is was quiet and just a nice place to be.

I took those wonderful free classes at the WAM in the 50's. And like Suzanne I remember the peculiar smell of the building, going downstairs for classes, a wonderful teacher named Mary Murphy, papier mache animals on Fridays, stern guards at the entrance, and the wonderful collection. Recently I had lunch at the very nice restaurant in the museum and spent moments reminiscing in the French romanesque chapel.

I grew up in Worcester and now live in Syracuse, NY. You wouldn't believe how many people are familiar with the Worcester Art Museum!

The couple that lived on the second floor of my Father's house out Main South, the gentleman, Harold Obershaw work there at the Art Museum, he was also an artist, and was a good friend to me.

Also remember the 1950's art classes for kids, way in back at the building addition, yup remember them guards at the front door made a kid pay attention. The paper mache animals made one Saturday, then painted the next.

Harold Obershaw was my grand uncle and worked their. I spent lived nearby and spent thousands of hours visiting him and touring the museum from 53 to 57 as a young boy. I remember you Al Warhust.
